Lobatus gallus, previously known as Strombus gallus, common name the rooster conch or rooster-tail conch,[2] is a species of medium-sized sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Strombidae, the true conchs.[1]

Distribution

This species is found from southeast Florida and Bermuda to the West Indies and further south to Brazil.[3]

Shell description

The average shell length of this species is about 12.5 cm.[3]

The maximum recorded shell length is 197 mm.[4]

Habitat

Minimum recorded depth is 0.3 m.[4] Maximum recorded depth is 82 m.[4]

Phylogeny

The following cladogram is based on sequences of nuclear histone H3 gene and mitochondrial cytochrome-c oxidase I (COI) gene, and shows the phylogenetic relationships of (32 analyzed) species in the genus Strombus and Lambis, including Strombus gallus, the basionym of Lobatus gallus. This cladogram was proposed by Latiolais et al (2006)[5]:
